LASHing outInspired by GreenTea, I decided to go through my stash of makeup and reorganize it (once again) andHow do you lash out?
realized that I have accumulated quite a collection of Mascaras: Clinique, Shiseido, Loreal, Rimmel, Maybelline, that I have used only once or twice and some I've never used at all.
Although I possessed an eyelash curler for many years, I've never learned how to adequately manipulate the tool to make my stalk straight eyelashes curvacious and long. Prior to this summer, my [not so] secret to having curva-licious eyelashes is a PERM (more about this in the future) and I would use Maybelline's Great Lash CLEAR Mascara to further define them. Now that I learned how to use a eyelash curler I look forward to using it every morning and I use this: Maybelline Lash Discovery Waterproof Mascara
I also started experimenting with Rimmel for volume...
But I'm not too happy with the effects, the increase in volume seems to weigh my eyelashes down. After searching through old magazines I found an old how to article in GlamourMag circa 1year ago. Here is what the MAKEU UP PROS had to say:- Curl Gently - Don't Crimp: To lock in the sexy, curvy swoop, makeup pros clamp a lash curler as colse to the roots as possible (squinting helps) and pulse gently three times. Squeezing tightly causes a weird crimp that makes lashes stick straight up.
- Coat, Comb, and repeat - Quickly: Blot your wand on a tissue to get rid of excess mascara before applying. Then do one coat and, if necessary, sweep off clumps with a metal lash comb; these have finer teeth than the plastic kind. If you crave longer, fuller, sexier lashes, add more coats before the mascara dries so it doens't glop up.
- Wiggle it (just a bit): To get tiny hairs seperated and evenly coated, pros work the mascara wand side to side as they move it outwardand up. Want a very natural look? Rub mascara on a flat eyeliner crush and paint it into your lashes. You can use this for your lower lashes on a regular basis.
- Your Roots: Decrease the pressure on your wand as you move upward; you want to lay it on thick at the roots. Too much mascara on the ends makes lashes look smaller and clumpier. Gently push back your lid and dot mascara or black liner between each hair. Your lashes will look really full.
- Smudge-proof: To keep mascara from smudging, experts like to finsih with a top coat of waterproof mascara to help regular formulas stay put. Also, don't wear heavy eye cream during the day, dust your concealer with powder (oil causes the waxes in mascara to migrate) and toss your tube after five months (as mascara dries out it is more likely to flake onto your cheeks)
- The top 6 Mascaras chosen by makeup artists:
- Le 2 de Guerlain Two Brush Mascara (35 USD) - has two brush sizes so you reach every lash and make it count.
- Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara (7 USD) - can be built up to any thickness you desire
- DiorShow Mascara (24 USD) - the fat brush plus the unbeatable texture creates the best wonderfully thick lashes
- CoverGirl Lash Blast Mascara (8 USD) - plastic brush builds ultra-defined old hollywood lashes
- Rimmel Eye Magnifier Exact Definition Mascara (7 USD) - this foolproof formula gives very feathery, effortlessly beautiful lashes.
- YSL Luxurious Mascara (28 USD) - has an amazingly effective, luxurious new brush, perfect for creating major volume at the lashes' roots.
I know I'm no longer a teen but I love teenvogue's beauty editor Eva Chen. I hope I get to work with her in the future. Here is what she uses on her lashes...My lashes are SUPER thin and SUPER straight naturally and most mascaras are too heavy for me too! Here's what I do:*curl lashes with either my Shu Uemura or Shiseido curler. Love this curler because it's pinch-free!
*apply a small amount of liner right into the lashline (Tarte and Clinique make great thin-tip liners that look super subtle). This really helps boost the look of lashes!
*apply shadow (lately, I've been loving Laura Mercier's African Violet shade)
*finally, apply mascara. Now, it may seem wasteful, but I always wipe down the brush once (with a tissue) before applying. I LOVE Shiseido, Neutrogena, and Shu Uemura mascara. They are great for gals with fine lashes!
*comb through mascara with a brush to remove any clumps (they're rare with the above mascaras).

pet peeve? having too much on... cakey! blah.
lancome hypnose... or imju fiberwig... or kate dollish long mascara. can't live without it. my eyelashes are naturally straight too... i blowdry my eyelash curler so its hot and then curl my lashes :)
I don't have any fail proof trick, but I will say that the eyelash curler picks are right on.. for Asian eyes, Shiseido and Shu are the best! I have both, but I personally find Shu to work better for me. I don't use primers b/c they tend to flatten out the curl. Currently I'm using Estee Lauder's Magnascopic, and Sugar's Double Wink Mascara (awesome for keeping curl!). Hope you're having a good day! :)
too much make up...and once it comes off its like, "WTF!"
definitely perm + loreal volume shocking double extension mascara. my eyelashes are pretty long, but loreal's mascara does wonders although it can turn out too cockroach-leggish.
ps. im not a guy, but i hate girls with crazy falsies AND colored contacts. waaaaay too much there sista.
oh but i just found out loreal tests on animals.... so i might have to switch to a different mascara soon :(
I put a business card between my eyelashes and eyelid before I add mascara. That way I wont worry about smudging any of that hard-to-get-off mascara onto my eyeshadow-ed lids (this is esp annoying since asians have pretty flat faces and lids)!
Good entry!

you're beautiful, just don't mess with make-up while driving
yeah, too much makeup makes it like you're hiding sometimes, be like the rest of the girls and use your hair. I don't understand the meaning of really dark red lipsticks... Eye shadow/liner that's really blue/black. Bright red toenails-- why do girls paint their toenails?
one word - REVITALASH!! (did you read my last entry, hon?) :P oh and fast lash by tweezerman is great for getting that false lash length - i think i blogged about it as MA way back. :) otherwise, depending on my mood, i alternate b/t great lash, diorshow, lashblast, lash discovery, lash exact (love this one), ettusais (with the separator comb), anna sui, and max factor, to name a few. yikes!
Fail proof eye makeup trick? I'd say always, always use an eyeshadow primer (I love UDPP) before applying anything into your eyes. It makes the eyeshadow stay longer and prevents crease, plus it enhances the colour of your eyeshadow too. And always, always use a liner + mascara. You can skip eyeshadows but liner + mascara is a must :)
What mascara do I use? I'm currently using a korean/jap brand that my sis recently got for me from Hong Kong (you can see pics in my blog). It's SO amazing.....my eyelashes looked like falsies afterwards and it helped to hold the curl after using an eyelash curler. Now I can finally say byebye to my falsies because I found the perfect mascara! Wooot!
i'll let you in on my secret:
I use sephora's heated eyelash curler after I apply mascara (givenchy phenomen'eyes) for a curl to boot!
i have eyelash extensions... they are not good for the real lashes but with them on, i wake up looking pretty and don't need any makeup cos they make yr eyes look really really good!
But alas, laziness comes with a price, when they fall off after a couple weeks, they tend to 'pull' a couple real lashes with them.
Before them, I used fake lashes. a cinch to put on and no need for mascara or eye makeup cos they bring out the eyes.... I really loved them cos though they were long, they looked natural and not OTT like the kind clubbers wear.
Ha i guess you can say I hate to put eye makeup!
Good advice. Thanks
Diorshow Iconic is the best new mascara on the market. Love the formula, the way it curls the lash but doesn't cake or smudge.
I am in love.
Former favorite was Lancome Hypnose and also Definicils before that, but nothing compares to Iconic. Not even the original Diorshow, which is too heavy for my tastes.
HIHI..love this post~ i know you would love to hear my comment on this~ hehehe
I say crimp your lashes in at least two areas, 1 at the base of lashes and slowly work your way to the tip of the lashes.
Then, apply waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascara dries more quickly than regular mascara and this helps your lashes stay in shape. Lashes like ours, needs the waterproof so the curls can stay up. Non waterproof mascara dries slower and the wetness can weigh your lashes down. I love the Maybelline LASH DISCOVERY. Hehe i think i got it with you a while ago. I hope you toss that one out, cuz it's been about 2 yrs since.
If you want volume, either continue applying massive amount of LASH Discovery or apply another mascara that helps the volume. This time you can use non waterproof, but don't apply too much (the wetness may weigh it down). BUT i still prefer to continue applying something waterproof.
After that, I like to line my inner eyelid (under my lashes) with a thin black eyeliner. This will make your lashes look darker.
Taking off the waterproof mascara can be a pain at times. I like to use the purple bottle makeup remover from CLinique.
If you don't prefer to use waterproof then i suggest Sephora's FIberWig, Diorshow or clinique's Lashpower mascara. But there's a whole nother procedure for that.
Maybe I should post some pictures of my lashes~ hehe.. yeah i know i still owe you the curling hair tutorial~ I'll get to it.. did you learn it yet?
@akareee - I have that too (sephora's heated eyelash curler) so I'm going to try it tomorrow morning! THANK YOU Akareee!!!!
@champagnepout - I almost glued my eyes shut using the glue. I'm sooo staying away from fakies from now on!!!
I love to perm it tho but I got tooo lazy =/ maybe i'll do it again =)
@VTsFoodJournal86 - wow this is the second time I've heard about the business card trick. now i really have to try it! thanks =)
@aperfectknot - gosh hun! you have more mascara than all of us combined. I did read your entry and looked up revitalash. I'm super curious and if all else fails that will be my backup =)
can't wait to go thru your headshots. =P
@lil_vengee - omg now that is a mascara that I'll be coveting. hopefully the asian beauty boutiques in chinatown will have them. I"ll search this weekend =D
I use YSL's Faux Cils and it's pretty fabulous! The creamy ink-blank formula thickens up my lashes perfectly. I'll have to try heyjulsiscoo's recommendation (DiorShow Iconic)!
hehe no problem. Just make sure to heat up the curler for a while so it get really hot. and hold it at the base of the lash against your eyes. I learned this from a close friend and it works wonders- the key is to curl AFTER you've applied mascara ;) let me know how it works!
i haven't tried revitalash but used to use talika's eyebrow product (same as eyelash but better applicator IMHO).
i love opera mylash and imju fiberwig. i stock up in asia on fiberwig since it's almost half price there compared to sephora. i use a mascara wand brush to brush out after each application.
i used to be a strong advocate of shu uemura's eyelash curler (i slowly step it out from the root) but recently have found that shiseido is a better fit.
